  • Commiphora Erythreae Opoponax Hagar - Somalia

Opoponax, locally known as “Hagar” in parts of Somalia, is a fragrant resin obtained from Commiphora erythraea, a tree closely related to true myrrh species. It is often called “sweet myrrh” because its scent is smoother and more rounded than the sharper, more bitter profile of traditional myrrh. The resin forms naturally or through tapping and hardens into dark, aromatic masses that are valued primarily for fragrance rather than visual clarity.

  • Characteristics

Dark brown to deep amber, sometimes nearly black. Usually irregular lumps or broken pieces, occasionally with bits of bark or dust.
Semi-soft to firm depending on temperature, and can become sticky or pliable when warm. Judged more by depth and pleasantness of aroma than by visual purity.

Scents: rich, lingering scent, sweet, warm, and balsamic, slightly spicy with soft woody undertones. Less sharp and less medicinal than true myrrh.

  • Historically

Resins from Commiphora species have a long-standing role in the Horn of Africa. Collected for centuries as part of regional trade in aromatic resins, alongside frankincense. Used locally in households and cultural practices for scent and atmosphere. Transported through traditional trade routes connecting inland Somali regions to coastal markets. Opoponax (Hagar) likely served as a more accessible, everyday aromatic resin, complementing more widely known myrrh varieties.

  • Traditional Uses

Burned for a sweet, warm, and enveloping aroma, often used to soften or enrich sharper resins in blends, burned in homes to create a welcoming and calming environment. Used in artisanal incense and natural fragrance products. Sometimes infused into oils or balms. Appreciated by resin collectors for its “sweet myrrh” character.
