Greek Natural Mastiha (Chios Mastic Gum)

  • Greek Natural Mastiha (Chios Mastic Gum)

Mastiha, also called Chios mastic, is a natural resin collected from the mastic tree, an evergreen shrub. Small cuts in the bark release resin that dries into irregular, translucent pieces known as “tears.” Genuine Chios mastiha is traditionally produced in the southern part of the Greek island of Chios.

  • Characteristics

Small pieces of mastic resin with a clean, bright, pine-like aroma and a lightly sweet, balsamic quality. Unlike leafy herbs, resin is best used in a burner made for resin. Begin with one small piece, put in the incense bowl and place on a tealight candle burner; it softens and releases fragrance as it warms.
