  • Boswellia sacra (Dark Shaabi grade) - Oman

Boswellia sacra is one of the most well-known frankincense species, native to Oman, Yemen, and parts of the Horn of Africa. “Dark Shaabi” refers to a lower commercial grade of its resin, typically collected later in the harvesting cycle or from less selective sorting. While it lacks the visual clarity and brightness of premium grades, it remains widely used due to its strong, earthy aroma and accessibility.

  • Characteristics

Usually dark amber to brown, sometimes with grayish or blackened areas, harder and more rugged than high-grade frankincense. Has strong and heavy, earthy and smoky, slightly bitter or resinous, less citrus brightness than higher grades. Considered a common or everyday grade, still aromatic, but less refined.

  • Historically

It was a key product in ancient trade routes linking Arabia with North Africa, the Mediterranean, and parts of Asia. Frankincense from this species was valued for religious rituals, burial practices, and temple offerings. Lower grades like Shaabi were likely used more commonly in daily life, while higher grades were reserved for ceremonial or elite use.

  • Traditional Uses

Commonly used in homes for everyday fragrance. Suitable for larger spaces due to its heavier smoke. Blended with higher-grade resins or woods to create balanced incense. Popular in bulk incense production. Used in cultural and traditional aromatic practices.
