    Boswellia dalziellii “Harrabi” frankincense from Nigeria is a West African resin known for its warm, earthy‑sweet aroma, high essential‑oil content, and deep roots in regional traditional medicine. West Africa’s signature frankincense species, high in  boswellic‑acid and essential‑oil content, warm, sweet, amber‑earth aroma unlike Arabian or Somali types, its rare outside Nigeria and Burkina Faso. Its deeply rooted in traditional medicine with modern pharmacological support.

  • Historically

    Boswellia dalziellii is a frankincense tree native to West and Central Africa, including northern Nigeria, where the Harrabi type is harvested. It grows in wooded savannas, dry forests, and rocky hills across Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Chad.

    The tree is 4–15 m tall, with papery peeling bark that reveals greenish underbark and exudes a fragrant white oleo‑gum‑resin that hardens into frankincense tears.

  • Traditional Uses

    B. dalziellii is a cornerstone of West African ethnomedicine, with bark, resin, and leaves used for: Epilepsy treatment (stem bark decoctions in Nigeria). Diarrhea relief. Antioxidant and antimicrobial applications These uses are supported by pharmacological studies showing anticonvulsant, antidiarrheal, and antioxidant activity.

    The bark contains gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, incensole, and β‑sitosterol, compounds linked to antibacterial and antioxidant effects.

    Nigerian dalziellii resin also used for: Incense burning. Natural chewing gum.
