Benzoin Resin - Siam - Vietnam

Siam benzoin, harvested primarily in northern Vietnam and Laos is the fragrant resin of Styrax tonkinensis, known locally for its sweet, creamy, vanilla‑amber aroma and its long history in temple incense, perfumery, and traditional medicine. Compared to Sumatran benzoin, Siam benzoin is lighter, smoother, and more floral, often forming pale, almond‑shaped tears prized in both regional and international aromatic traditions.

Pale yellow to light brown smooth, opaque pieces.

Scents: sweet, creamy aroma with vanilla, soft floral, and light spice notes. Produces gentle, pleasant, slightly powdery smoke.

Softer and more delicate than Sumatra benzoin.

Styrax tonkinensis thrives in: mountain foothills of northern Vietnam, in the humid subtropical climates, and forests with seasonal monsoon cycles. These conditions create a resin that is lighter, sweeter, and more floral than benzoin from volcanic regions.

Forms pale yellow to golden tears, often smooth and rounded. Fresh resin is soft and pliable; aged resin becomes firm and slightly waxy.

Scents: creamy, vanilla with a gentle light floral‑almond notes, and a faint honeyed warmth. Produces a light, clean, almost powdery finish when burned.
